Annie Whitehead learnt the trombone as a child and by fourteen was playing with local brass bands in Oldham, Lancashire and the Youth Jazz Orchestra in Manchester. By sixteen she had turned professional, touring Europe with Ivy Benson's All Girl Orchestra. In the late seventies and early eighties Annie was heavily involved in the London music scene and played with many of the day's big artists, such as Paul Weller, Elvis Costello and Jah Wobble and was a founding member of Working Week. During this time Annie worked in, and was highly regarded by many musical fields besides Jazz, particularly Reggae, Latin, African and Pop. Very much in demand, Annie worked with Charlie Watts, Carol Grimes and extensively with drummer, John Stevens until in 1984 Annie formed her own band, releasing the brilliant album 'Mix Up' as well as producing their single 'Alien Style'. The band toured widely through Europe and Asia. In the early nineties, Annie joined the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and appears on their albums 'Broadcasting From Home', 'Union Cafe' and 'Concert Program'. Along with Jennifer Maidman, also of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, she formed the Jazz-Funk band Rude and released the album 'This is Rude' in 1996. In more recent years, amongst numerous other projects, Annie has teamed up with our own Elton Dean with his Newscene and Didier Malherbe. They both team up with In Cahoots on 'Conspiracy Theories'.
